Urban Triage opens its first dedicated space on Madison’s south side

November 17, 2020

Madison-based nonprofit Urban Triage opened its new office and community space, located in the former UW South Partnership offices, to the public for tours on Sunday.

To maintain adequate COVID-19 safety measures, the tours were held in small groups with strict social distancing and face-covering requirements.

Urban Triage announced the grand opening on November 4 via press release.

The new location includes two separate spaces. One building is an office space for Urban Triage members and includes a kid’s playroom, a kitchenette, and a variety of conference/gathering spaces. The second building is an open area which can be rented out by other organizations as well as individuals.

“We are using it for a multitude of ways,” said Alex Booker, Urban Triage’s communications specialist.

“So our team has been working at those offices in the back. But we also have our workgroup space in the front. We have our Supporting Healthy Black families co-conspirators workroom. Those can all be held out of that space. But it is intended for us to have our workgroups, to have celebrations, fundraisers, and also for people in the Black community to rent or reserve the space if they want to use it,” Booker added.

The space will be open for community purposes only after the COVID-19 pandemic is under control.

The buildings are located in Villager Mall near several other community resources.

“We also are next to Urban League. We’re next to Planned Parenthood, Access Health. We’re next to a lot of community resources, and Madison College as well is right over here,” Booker said, referring to Madison College’s new Goodman South Campus. “So we’re close to a lot of places that have the people we are trying to support. We’re also right next to the (Madison Metro Bus South) Transfer Point to make sure that people who don’t live directly in this community are able to reach out.”

Booker added that the new space is not only important to the community but for the Urban Triage team as well.

“It’s really exciting because we have not had our own space before,” Booker said.

“You’re able to do so much when you’re not being held back. You don’t even notice how much power you had,” Booker added. “That’s what we want to give everyone who comes through our doors, empower them to feel like they can do whatever it is that they want when they don’t have white supremacy holding them back.

The Urban Triage office and community space is located on 2312 South Park Street, Madison, Wisconsin, 53713.
