Urban Triage Expands Programming to Better Serve Community Needs

December 12, 2024

Since its founding in 2019, Urban Triage has remained steadfast in its mission to empower and uplift vulnerable communities and communities of color in Dane County. Under the leadership of Brandi Grayson, the nonprofit has evolved from grassroots advocacy to a multi-faceted organization offering transformative programs addressing housing insecurity, health disparities, and community empowerment.

Through partnerships like Dane Core 2.0, Urban Triage has supported over 3,000 individuals in finding stable housing, bridging gaps in Madison’s housing landscape that often overlook Black-led organizations. Despite challenges, the organization has built trust with landlords and the community by delivering results, centering lived experiences, and hiring staff who reflect their communities.

Urban Triage’s programs extend beyond housing, addressing systemic inequities through initiatives like Supporting Healthy Black Agriculture (SHBA), which promotes urban agriculture, healthy lifestyles, and self-sufficiency. The organization has become a cornerstone for community engagement, hosting events such as the Black Brilliance Gala, Summer Kickback, and Urban Harvest Festival, fostering connections, and celebrating Black excellence.

As Urban Triage prepares to open its Youth Transitional House in 2025, it remains committed to creating pathways for self-actualization and systemic change. Despite facing scrutiny and systemic barriers, Grayson and Urban Triage stand firm in their purpose: delivering on their promises and redefining what’s possible for Black-led organizations in Dane County.

With continued support from grants and community contributions, Urban Triage is poised to deepen its impact, demonstrating that resilience and commitment to community transformation can change lives and systems.
