Urban Triage Cultivates Change with 'Supporting Healthy Black Agriculture' Program, Uplifting Black Farmers and Communities
September 25, 2024
Urban Triage's Supporting Healthy Black Agriculture (SHBA) program empowers Black families by addressing health disparities and social inequities through a comprehensive approach that combines advocacy, education, and connection to nature. The SHBA workgroup series offers practical training in food cultivation while exploring the entrepreneurial possibilities within agriculture, specifically from the Black perspective. The program also tackles critical barriers like land access and culturally relevant agricultural education by providing healing spaces and community-building opportunities. Graduates of the program gain the skills needed to create and maintain their gardens, with Urban Triage offering further support to help participants establish gardens at home. One notable success story involved a 7-year-old participant who, with guidance, overcame his fear of spiders during a garden session, underscoring the program's ability to foster personal growth through nature. SHBA is committed to cultivating sustainability, promoting wellness, and creating lasting change within Black communities through the power of agriculture. Urban Triage believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to learn to grow their food and about the food systems they participate in and should have access to their local food systems. With the support of volunteer community members and partners, they continue to strive to expand a more sustainable and accessible local food system.
