MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Donors and non-profits alike participated on Tuesday in The Big Share, which is an annual online day of giving. Spearheaded by Community Shares of Wisconsin, the initiative helps support local non-profits.
One participating non-profit, Urban Triage, has programming that supports Black families and children. The campaign raised over $680,000 this year. Urban Triage Executive Assistant Charnice Anderson said these donations help them achieve their mission.
“Our mission is to make everyone feel heard and seen as it relates to what resources and community they need, especially as it relates to homelessness,” Anderson said.
With the many programs Urban Triage offers, Anderson said the money raised will go toward multiple programs.
“Our agriculture program and our Supporting Healthy Families Program are very important, so that we can provide resources to the people that need them. We are looking to assist wherever we can and when we can,” Anderson said.
Urban Triage has many goals including to connect more with the community. One of their long-term goals is to have a farm of their own to teach people about local food systems. Agriculture Manager Ruthanna Hutton-Okpalaeke said giving days like these allows them to be one step closer to these goals.
“So, it’s about building community, it’s about supporting the most vulnerable members of our communities and strengthening our food systems. We really focus on all of those things. So, I think it’s really important to invest where you are,” Hutton-Okpalaeke said.
Urban Triage was just one of the non-profits involved in The Big Share this year. Anderson said The Big Share is crucial for organizations like theirs to grow.
