Why Celebrating Black Leadership Matters: Inside Urban Triage's Golden Hour Gala

On July 19th, more than 125 community leaders, advocates, supporters and changemakers gathered at The Madison Club for The Golden Hour: Reclaiming Our Crown, a celebration of Black excellence, community leadership and the power of investing in Black voices. The event wasn't simply a brunch or awards ceremony but a reminder that recognition itself is a form of community building.

For organizations like Urban Triage, creating spaces where Black achievement is celebrated is just as important as addressing urgent community needs. When communities intentionally recognize leaders whose work strengthens opportunities for others, they help create a culture where future generations can see themselves reflected in positions of influence, advocacy and success.

Honoring Those Who Amplify Black Voices

During the event's signature "Crowning" ceremony, Urban Triage presented the Reclaiming Our Voice Award to Bianca Martin, host of City Cast Madison, for her commitment to elevating community stories and creating space for conversations that matter.

The Golden Voice of Truth Award was presented to Rob Chappell, executive editor of Madison365, and reporter Omar Waheed in recognition of their work ensuring Black stories, accomplishments and lived experiences remain visible in local journalism.

Together, the awards recognized not only individual achievement, but the lasting impact that thoughtful, community-centered storytelling has on representation, advocacy and belonging.

Celebration Is Community Work

Urban Triage is widely recognized for programs that address housing instability, youth opportunity, agriculture, and family support. But the organization's work also includes creating opportunities for joy, recognition and cultural celebration.

Too often, conversations surrounding Black communities focus exclusively on hardship. Events like The Golden Hour intentionally shift that narrative by making space to celebrate excellence, leadership and the people helping move the community forward.

Recognizing Black leaders publicly reinforces the importance of investing in Black-led institutions, organizations and voices while inspiring future generations to see leadership as something that belongs to them, too.

Still feeling the warmth, the music, the food, the energy of something so much bigger than an event,” said Brandi Grayson, CEO of Urban Triage. ”It was a moment this community will carry for years to come. Thank you to everyone who participated. You reminded us why this work matters and why Urban Triage exists."

Investing in the Future

The celebration also had a tangible impact. The Golden Hour raised $50,000 to support Urban Triage's year-round programs serving Black families and communities throughout Dane County, including the Youth Employment Program, Supporting Healthy Black Agriculture Program and Specialty Crop Hemp Program.

Every dollar raised helps expand opportunities, strengthen families and continue the work of building healthier, more equitable communities.
